Manuals and lists of parts for vintage Singer sewing machines

When you get a vintage Singer sewing machine, you have loads of questions. Mainly, how old and valuable it is and which model it’s standing in front of you.
Knowing the model, you can look for broken or missing parts, and you can get a manual to learn how to operate a functional machine.

But how do you answer those questions?

You could start by checking the extant records of Singer sewing machines serial numbers, which have been kept for decades and, when preserved, can tell you where a particular machine was made, in which year, what the model is.

Searching for the serial number can be no easy task (as I tested myself with my first machine): this is why I gathered all the extant serial numbers I could find from reliable sources and put together a searchable database. The search for a manual could be another cumbersome task, so I thought I could help others who find them in the same challenging situations I encountered.

Now, when you search for a serial number in our database, you’ll also get the link to manuals, if available.

For your convenience, I also list here all the links to PDF manuals I could find. In a separate section, you find the useful lists of parts, that are – as the name itself implies – booklets listing all the parts of a certain model, with codes for every single piece, so you can find replacements.  Thank you to ISMACS, the Smithsonian Institute and the Internet Archive for being huge resources for this list.

Besides the Singer sewing machine manuals, you can find a small selection of other manuals as well, for motors, stocking darners, etc…

Come back for future reference, as the list of manuals is constantly expanding. And if you know of Singer sewing machine manuals that are not listed here, please link them in the comments below!

What is the difference between class and model?

In this list you’ll find the manuals organized by class, with specific manuals for variants.

A Singer complete model number is made of a class, a location letter and a submodel or variant. Discover more about how model numbers work in the specific paragraph.

Singer sewing machine manuals, organized by class

Singer manuals – instruction manuals and adjusters’ manuals alike – used to have a Form Number: an identification code for the specific booklet. Where preserved, the manual code refers to this particular ID.

Lists of parts, organized by class

Those are not instruction manuals as we think, but rather useful lists of parts a certain sewing machine was composed of. They are – as the name itself implies – booklets listing all the parts of a certain model, each of them with a code that identifies it, to be able to refer to the correct part you need when looking for a replacement. As the proper instruction manuals, also lists of parts had a Form Number, to identify the specific booklet.
