The Singer "New Family", introduced in 1865 and soon sold in the UK, was later renamed Singer 12.
Early models, with their distinctive "fiddlebed" shape, used a transverse boat-shaped shuttle and round-shank "Class 12x1" needles.
Later models had a rectangular base.
From 1870 it was available for semi-industrial use with a longer arm, as the class 13.
There are many industrial variants, like the 12K Industrial Free Arm.
