Sphinx Variant (Indian Star)
Official Singer name: 23 Indian Sphinx
In use up to 1940
In use for Classes:
- 15
Based on the Sphinx / Memphis design, in the Indian national colors, with the Indian Star on the bed plate. The Indian Star decal was an attempt to stimulate the emerging Indian market at the beginning of the 20th century. Entering this market was not easy, though. The main difficulties were overcoming caste prejudice, language differences and limited access to women.
The Indian Star machines say 'Singer' in different languages on each point of the star: Onya, Singhalese, Gujarati, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam (or Tamil), Urdu.
The Indian Star appears as a variant in several decals, on different models.
